I had the best weekend; two of my nephews came over to spend the night and my littlest baby was up my butt. Usually he’s grandma’s boy, or enamored with his aunt Julie (and her Minecraft), but every few months the moon moves into my house and Haukie is all over me. Usually we rock out to Disney Infinity and Chariot – two household favorites – but this time he asked to play Child of Light.
We spent the next hour playing Aurora the future queen and Igniulus the firefly, giggling over riddles as I read in silly voices, fighting foes and flying through Lumeria. He was such blast to play with and a wonderful teammate. He’s four (he’ll be five this summer) and the game is 10+ but he nailed all the combat in minutes. One of the best parts for me, though, was seeing how much he enjoyed the story.
He was heartbroken after the beginning prologue and would often pause and say “this music is sad ’cause she died”. He’s totally in love with Igniculus and his “butt power”, and every time we’d defeat a new foe he’d do this adorable little run-spin and give me a big high five. We enjoyed it so much we played through the first three chapters, and he asked to play again the next morning. All told we played for two hours, which I thought was a pretty good attention span for a toddler playing a poetry-based RPG.
One of the best personal highlights was I started reading again! I’ve been struggling with a book for nearly a month and I finally dropped it. It seems super simple, but it’s a huge weight off me to let it go and move on to something better. It’s so nice to enjoy reading again. Now I can’t wait to go to the library this week and check out some more new books!
